    Welcome Address

Prof Tapan Kumar Lahiri, Principal, Medical College, Kolkata.

Respected Dignitaries, Guests, Colleagues, alumni of this college, staffs of this institution and students.

It is my great privilege and honour for getting this opportunity to welcome you all in this auspicious 181st Foundation day celebration of Medical College, Kolkata, which is one of the oldest institution not only in India, but also in Asia. This college was established in 1835 and since then, it is delivering high quality teaching facility as well as patient care service to the Nation. Many national and internationally famous medical personalities studied in this college and served as teachers in different phases of their career. Till date many of our alumni are also working all over the country and abroad with fame and dignity.

We are extremely grateful to our Health Dept., Govt. of West Bengal and our honorable Chief Minister, who are constantly helping us to improve all services of this heritage institution and maintain its glory. With the active help of all of our advisers, well wishers, extremely helpful staffs and colleagues, we are trying hard to achieve and become one of the first ten premier institution of the country.  We were able to complete many projects and keep pace with the advancement in last few years though there are still ‘miles to go’ before we can achieve that. Let me highlight some of our academic and infrastructural development activities in this occasion.

Before narrating the activities, I like to inform you about one remarkable event. On 2nd December, 2014, we have peacefully conducted ‘Students Union Election’ which was due since 2013. This was possible only due to the active help of Chairman, RKS and active cooperation of all the students, staffs and security personnel. The students behaved excellently well and there was no single untoward incidence. I am extremely thankful to them.

    Academic Activities:-

    1.      When we were student of this college during 60’s-70’s the no. of seats were 135. It was increased to 155 subsequently. Since 2011, the seats have been increased to 250. For the first three batches admissions, Medical Council of India has not raised any objection. However last year, the MCI pointed out and asked to rectify many infrastructural deficiencies according to their detailed guideline. Our health dept. authorities immediately took measures and by their relentless efforts and repeated meeting with MCI authority, permission regarding admission in increased seats was obtained. This year also we are trying our best to fulfill the required criteria, so that we will get the approval of MCI for admission of 250 students in 5th batch. Development works are going on throughout the college campus in war footing. I sincerely hope that we will be able to reach the target within stipulated time.

    2.      Many research projects and clinical trials are going on successfully in many of our departments. Here, I also like to mention that our reconstituted Ethics Committee has been working with utmost sincerity to monitor all these activities.

    3.      Some of our young enthusiastic faculty members have been trained from some specialized renowned institutions for starting Paediatric Nephrology and Paediatric Cardiology units. We are also trying to start another separate Paediatric Oncology unit very soon.

    4.      Several Paramedical Courses with increased seats are successfully running in our college and the courses will provide us much needed trained medical technicians.

    5.      The students of college of nursing situated in the campus are doing very well in respect of academic activities and rendering service to the people. I am especially thankful to Principal, College of Nursing for her constant help and cooperation to tide over the crisis.

    Infrastructural Improvements:-

    1.      Academic Building:- We have started using this auditorium, examination halls etc. for the last few months. However, PWD are still working here to complete some of the urgent pending issues for full utilization.

    2.      MCH Hub:- Our government is determined to deliver a ‘quality of art’ Paediatric Care in the state. So, in this aim, five storied MCH Hub has been constructed and nearing completion. The Chairman HLTF and our Chairman RKS took keen interest and did regular monitoring for its completion. One of the largest SNCU of the country with all the high quality services has been established and working in 2nd floor of Eden Hospital.

    3.      Three Lecture Theatres of 300 capacity have been constructed on 5th, 6th and 7th floor and one 650 capacity Lecture Theatre near Academic Building is under progress according to MCI norms. The work to establish another 300 capacity Hospital Lecture Theatre has also started. These were planned and constructed according to urgent and compelling MCI demand.

    4.      Additional floors at Main Boys Hostel and Swarnamoyee Girls Hostel have been constructed and nearing completion to meet the increased demand.

    5.      The renovated ‘Eden OT’ and adjacent “Vagini Nibedita” (Formerly Leicester Word) has been inaugurated and has started functioning. The ‘HDU’ at the same place will start functioning soon.

    6.      One 33 KV substation will be constructed and one new three storied night shelter building will be built up near Ezra hospital.

    7.      KMC has started working to establish a modernized VAT near Gate No.1.

    8.      Proposal for beautification of campus & renovation of diff entry and exit gates are waiting for necessary approval.

    9.      The work of constructing a Ten Storied Building in the space of old canteen and kitchen and 10 Storied Super Specialty Block near old OPD are under progress.

    10.  New Dialysis unit in PPP Model has been running successfully.

    11.  Our CT, MRI unit will be upgraded by installation of new machines.

    12.  The newly constructed ‘Bone Marrow Transplantation’ unit will start functioning soon.

    13.  The facility of advanced Faciomaxillary surgery has been started in collaboration with Dept. of Dentistry and Plastic Surgery.

    14.  RSBY and RSBK Projects are also running successfully.

    Others:-

    1.      The OPD service at our another campus, erstwhile Mayo Hospital, at Posta, Burrabazar has been started from 2nd January, 2015. The service is only limited to Dept. of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Eye, ENT and Physical Medicine by our faculty members and residents at present. We are trying to extend more services there gradually.

    2.      Our faculty members & residents are also managing another added campus i.e. LDVH. Urban Health Centre has been started in LDVH Campus, under the Dept. of Community Medicine.

    3.      I have given you a glimpse of huge activities which are going on in this institution. Our first priority is         to fulfill all the requirements of MCI as early as possible and to provide best quality academic and practical training of our students and tertiary patient care service to the people.

I am fortunate enough that I always got the blessings of all of my superiors and active sincere          help of all or our colleagues, staffs and students.

             Thanks
